This Sonata for violoncello and piano was written in 1968 and dedicated to Guerman Galynine (1922-1966), a student of Shostakovich and one of the most interesting composers of the soviet era.
This music is marked by memories of my meeting with Galynine at the Ivanovo Composer’s House shortly before his untimely death. I came to appreciate the exceptional quality of his talent through his well-known concerto for piano and orchestra during my years of studies and in fact found inspiration for some elements of the second movement of my sonata from that impressive work.
The three movements of this cello sonata — 14 minutes all in all — present a meditative narrative, in the language of music, about life and death.
Svetlana Leontchik, July 2010, Russia.
