Bach's 4-part chorale harmonizations have been admired and studied as models for beginners in composition ever since they were first collected and published in 1765 by his son, Philipp Emanuel. It is sometimes forgotten that the essence of Bach's musical art is contained in the expressive harmonies and ingenious voce-leading of his chorale settings. In this set of well-known passiontide hymn texts, each separate verse is set to a different Bach harmonization aptly chosen to dramatize the poems and create a satisfying motet-like musical result.
