Composed by Rick Robertson. 20th Century,Romantic Period,Repertoire,General Instructional. Sheet Music Single. 5 pages. Published by Rick Robertson (S0.24655).

This piece was written in 1990 for Tiffany Oliver, a gifted young student of mine who was born without fingers on her right hand, only a small nub where her thumb would have been. The fact that Tiffany performed this piece from memory in recital after only one semester of study is proof of her progress. Teaching Tiffany gave me the “break” that I needed to unlock and direct my creativity. Because of her handicap, I had to write pieces at times to give her interesting material to play. After writing this and some other sketches, I decided to direct my energies toward writing pedagogical pieces. After several abortive attempts, by 1993 I was regularly turning out pieces for students. In June of 2005 this work was shortened (to include only the A section) and cast again in 3/4 time at the request of Dr. Elyse Mach, who wished to include it in her Oxford University Press book “Playing the Piano, Piece By Piece”. Therefore it also stands as my first work to be published by a major publisher. So it would appear that my “first nocturne” has had many firsts in my career as a composer. (It was the first of my pieces to be performed by a pianist other than myself, and it was the first viable piece written after a 10-year hiatus.) Since the A section only was published under this title, I separated the B section in 2005, entitling it “ A Second Nocturne”. It too can be played alone, or the student can combine the two playing the first da capo, for a longer piece. Directions for this are marked in the score.
