A performance of a quartet- this one?- by Gibbs reviewed in the Musical Times in June 1920 (Volume 61, June 1 1920, page 390) specifies that it was not the premiere. Revista musicale Italiana also mentions a performance. (When were first two quartets written and what were their performance histories?...)

"Proxime accesit Carnegie Prize 1919".

Earlier quartets by Gibbs according to external link:

  • a C major op.1 unpublished, composed and performed in 1912 (probably a "quartet 0")-
  • a quartet op.6 later incorporated into op.8-
  • a G minor op.7 unpublished at B-P library (B-P?), dedicated to E. J. Dent, composed 1916 November and premiered 1917 April; (quartet 1?)
  • a A minor op8 (3 movements) composed 1917 also in manuscript dedicated to the London String Quartet (which premiered the op.7) - performed 1917 November (by the dedicatees) (quartet 2?)

Also several later quartets (pastoral quartet op.41, A major op.73 - recorded, G minor "miniature quartet" op.74 (both 1933, published), also String Quartet in C op.95 (1940), String Quartet in G minor (Kenilworth), Op 99 (unpublished), String Quartet "No.6" in C op.118 (1947) (unpublished), A Simple String Quartet, Op 140 (1954, unpublished), String Quartet in E minor (1958, unpublished) ). So even not counting opp.1 and 6, arguably about a dozen or so string quartets.- Schissel (Note: University of Adelaide has in their stacks Opp. 18, 73 and 74.)
