Misc. Notes According to the score I got ahold of, the cover page states an edition numbered "3438" whereas the first page of this score of the file shows "3436" under "4. Quartett". The 3438 mentioned is the same as Kammermusik No. 1 Op.24 No.1 score here on IMSLP. I think this score is most likely edition 3436. Update "3438" is First Edition according to Paul Hindemith's: A Research and Information Guide. The 3436 must be an old edition number before Op. 2 was designated as No. 1 in the seven string quartet series.

  • Hindemith wrote seven string quartets; Schott published all except for Op.2 (String Quartet No.1). The traditional numbering, with Op.10 (String Quartet No. 2) as the first quartet, is Schott's; throughout his lifetime and with a high degree of consistency, Hindemith numbered the Op.2 quartet as his first, and the remaining six quartets as Nos.2-7. The Op.22 quartet is even identified as No.4 on the program of its premiere performance. Since the early 1990s, all Schott printings of the quartets make use of Hindemith's own numbering.
