These elementary pieces are from a piano method Premieres Lecons-De Piano. a a la portee des enfants 1er age. published in Paris in 1886, for which Lambert was decorated by the King of Portugal and invited to become a musician of the Court. The Four Recreations are of a Baroque and Classical Style. The opening theme of the first one resembles the last movement of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nacht Musik. the fourth one with is imitative figurations is characteristic of J.S Bach's writing in the Klavierbuchlein fur Anna Magdalena Bach. The second and third pieces are in the style of the country dances by Mozart and Haydn.
