Die Komposition der Passion op. 170 erfolgte in mehreren Schritten in den Jahren 1984 bis 1991, angeregt und auch uraufgefuhrt durch Gertrud Zwicker und ihren Jugendchor Rein. Anfangs als punktuelle Stimmungsmusik zum gelesenen Passionstext und zu den Bachschen Choralen erdacht, entwickelte sich das Werk in mehreren Stufen bis zu einer durchgehenden und vielschichtigen Vertonung der Passion Christi. Heinz Kratochwil lasst - im Gegensatz zu Bach - den Evangelienbericht ganz schlicht von einem Sprecher vortragen. Der emotionelle Kommentar wird ebenfalls gesprochen, allerdings aus heutiger, moderner Sicht. Es sind meditative Texte von Sigrid Schweiger, die den Menschen von heute beruhren und bewegen wollen. Das begleitende Orchester besteht ausschliesslich aus Streichern, aus denen sich als klanglicher Lichtglanz fur die Worte Christi ein solistisches Streichquartett herauslost. Elf Chorsatze aus den Passionen von J. S. Bach ubernimmt Kratochwil notengetreu in sein Werk. Alles andere ist Kratochwils eigene Musik, seine klanglichen Visionen von dem, was Leid, Bedrangnis, Elend und Tod heute bedeuten und auslosen. Und sogar da bezieht er an einer Stelle Bach ein. Im Vorspiel des Streichorchesters, das am Ende nochmals erklingt, hort man im Mittelteil, der nur von Solisten gespielt wird, einen kunstvollen Kanon zwischen Violoncello und 1.
