Fantasia for Solo Organ. 2001. composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. For Organ. Baroque Period, Classical Period, Romantic Period, 20th Century, 21st Century. Advanced. Score. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee. S0.9892. "Program note. Carson P. Cooman, a sophomore at Harvard College, is a composer who plays the organ. I was very surprised when he e-mailed me asking what my commission fee is for a solo organ work. I gave him a price and he said, ""Fine. Write me a five-minute piece. "" I later looked at his web site at www. carsoncooman. com and noticed that he has commissioned solo organ works from twenty-plus composers. He is also a very prolific composer in his own right, producing some twenty works in 2001 alone. This is the second work for solo organ in my portfolio. The first, ""Toccata, Adagio & Fugue,"" written for organist James David Christie, was finished only a couple of weeks ago. I felt very energized by that work, so I jumped right into the next, my ""Fantasia. "" J.S. Bach's ""Toccata, Adagio & Fugue in C Major, BWV 564"" had a direct influence on my ""TAF."" Likewise, Bach's ""Fantasia in G Major, BWV 572"" was the inspiration for my own ""Fantasia. "" Both Bach and I begin with a series of rapid sextuplet arpeggiations, followed by a chorale-like section. In Bach's case, the rapid figurations return for a conclusive ending resulting in a simple A-B-A form. In my case, the ""chorale"" returns a second time before a final recapitulation of the arpeggiations, and ends in a decisive F major. a symmetrical A-B-A-B-A structure.
