Malaguena Variations for Piano Solo. Harpsichord sheet music. Piano Solo sheet music. Advanced.

Original

Malaguena Variations for Piano Solo composed by Traditional Spanish. Arranged by Michael Bomier. For Piano, Piano Solo, Harpsichord. 20th Century, Repertoire, Latin, Secular. Advanced. Sheet Music Single. Michael Bomier #GEMV. Published by Michael Bomier. S0.24127. The set of 32 Variations on a Theme in C minor of Beethoven set the standard for both Beethoven himself, and his contemporaries. It is a virtual catalog of the possibilities for the transformation of music, especially as regards melody, figuration, and rhythm. This set of variations on the traditional Latin song Malaguena meld Spanish passion with the technical prowess of the Austro-Germanic School. The result is this simple theme, two sections of 8 bars each, with the music played twice within each phrase, taken to as many places as the technique will allow, within this Classical Teutonic model. There is a slow and subtle opening, followed by a simple statement of the two themes. Then, the fireworks begin to rise to a climax, and then settle down, only to rise again and again to the finale of chromatic broken octaves in contrary motion. In between there are triplets, quintuplets, hemiolas, chromatic half steps, in single notes and octaves, rolling chords with the tune in the top voice, even a series of glissandos. Because the theme is so basic, it will soak up whatever technical or expressive devices that surround it. Running time is 7 mins 45 secs at recommended tempo, longer if taken a bit more relaxed. Each variation occupies a line, and none go across a pageturn, for ease of use in reading and playing from the score. Pedal or not, as you see fit.
