The name Cakewalk No 6 from 'Children's Corner' has been preferred to the original and now racially controversial title which was Golliwog's Cakewalk. A companion piece to Le Petit Negre, it uses similar syncopated motifs which Debussy would have heard when the American band leader, Souza, toured Europe playing, arrangements of Scot Joplin's Ragtime. The piece is particularly humorous, with its often counter intuitive dynamics, and includes a satirical quotation from Wagner's Tristan and Isolde which starts at Bar 61. The 'cakewalk', itself, may well have originated as an African American satirical imitation of the ostentatious dancing of their owners at the balls and dances at which they would have provided the music. In the Quartet, there are some rhythmic and technical challenges which are necessary in order to capture the 'pianistic' nature of Debussy's original version.
