After studying law he took up music and became a chamber musician at the Wurzburg Court on violin and basset-horn in 1797. When in 1802 Wurzburg was annexed to Bavaria he lost this post and was appointed a military bandmaster. In 1805 Wurzburg changed hands again and Kuffner once again became a court Chamber Musician. In 1815 Wurzburg was again given to Bavaria and Kuffner was pensioned. His compositions provided him with a considerable income.
