Tchaikovsky completed The Nutcracker in early 1892, and the work was first performed in St. Petersburg in December of that same year. The engaging primary thematic material occurs mostly in the violin, while the secondary, coutermelodic material is in the lower strings. Slightly more advanced than Beginning Strings, this series begins to involve more position work and a slightly more complex rhythmic figures. Rehearsal piano is often provided.
