In 1815 he founded a factory for the manufacture of flutes, oboes, clarinets and basset horns, all of which were used by famous musicians of the day. Backofen also wrote numerous articles for music periodicals, including a report on music in Spain which he made after his visit as a young man. His compositions include concerti for clarinet and basset horn, concertanti for two clarinets in A, and for basset horn, harp and cello, this present quintet for the unusual combination of clarinet, violin, two violas, and cello as well as one for basset horn and strings, and numerous works for wind band.
