Original

Arise, Shine. Surge Illuminare. composed by Gerre Hancock. 1934-. For SATB choir, organ. Cathedral. Choral, Epiphany, General. Medium Difficult. Difficult. Choral octavo. Published by Paraclete Press. PL.0411. We are delighted to present this new anthem by one of America's most accomplished and beloved church musicians. Reflecting his personality, Gerre Hancock's setting is exuberant and thoughtful. The basis of the music is a series of flowing eighth notes, transformed at times into more intense expression to support the text. A heavier triplet figuration is used to undergird the more overt sections of the text and at the end, the music of the opening returns for the Gloria Patri. The accomplished choir will be challenged by the swift changes of mood and harmony and will find the work a pleasure to sing. The organ part is not unduly difficult and comments vividly on the text. "Arise, Shine" would make a splendid festival anthem at any season.
