One Step Ahead. Mike Kamuf. Grade 3.

Original

One Step Ahead composed by Mike Kamuf. For jazz band. Jazz Band. FJH Intermediate Jazz Ensemble. One Step Ahead is an original composition that alternates between a 4. 4 rock groove and a half-time funk feel. Grade 3. Score and set of parts. Duration 3 minutes, 40 seconds. Published by The FJH Music Company Inc. FJ.JE4135. The opening should be played aggressively but with the trumpet and guitar melody, harmony, and bass line being balanced. At bar 10, a combo statement of the A section melody occurs. The drum groove at this point is similar to that of the tune Birdland. A full-band statement of the A section begins at bar 28. At this point the rhythm section should begin to get a bit more intense in their approach to the groove and figures. At bar 46, a breakdown section gets under way with a return of the Birdland groove. Here, the tenor soloist begins with specifically written pitches. A sample solo with chord changes is provided. The following section should start building intensity around bar 98 and push toward the end of bar 105, which begins the shout section. Drums return to the rock groove at bar 132. In the final two bars, the drum fill should continue the melodic line as it occurred earlier. Appropriate for high school jazz ensembles. Lead trumpet ranges are modest and occasionally include optional notes for more accomplished players. Written solos are provided along with suggested parts for rhythm section and drum set. Guitar chord guide included. Grades 3 - 3.5.
