Der 1923 geborene Viktor Kalabis gehort zu den bedeutendsten tschechischen Komponisten der Gegenwart und ist Prasident der Bohuslav-Martinu-Stiftung in Prag. Im Zentrum seines Schaffens stehen sechs bedeutende Streichquartette. Das V. Quartett. 1984. wurde von Marc Chagalls Bildern beeinflusst. Im ersten Satz erinnern viele Partien an den "fliegenden Geiger", ein haufiges Element in Chagalls Bildern, im 3. Satz spielt der Geiger "auf dem Dach" - ebenfalls ein bekanntes Chagall-Motiv. Das Werk enthalt bedrohende Klange der bosen Welt, Momente tiefer Trauer, aber auch spontane Freude und ungestumes Temperament als Ausdruck ungebrochener Lebensfreude.
