Original

St. Wenzel-Triptych, Op. 70. Toccata, Ciacona und Fuge fur Orgel. Composed by Vitezslav Novak. 1870-1949. For organ. Czech title. Svatovaclavsky triptych. toccata, ciacona a fuga pro varhany. Classical. Performance score. Opus 70. Published by Editio Baerenreiter Praha. PA.H7806. ISBN 9790260002043. Classical. 33 x 26.5 cm inches. Besides an incidental prelude, the St Wenceslas Triptych is the only Novak's composition for organ. He wrote this piece during the WW II in 1941, and through the St Wenceslas legend, Novak pleaded with the Czech nation for an active resistance to the Nazi occupation. So was the composition perceived at its premiere in 1942. Shortly afterwards, Novak also made an orchestral version. The rousing organ fresco units the three movements, toccata, chaconne and fugue, in one big picture that is characteristic of one aspect of Novak's compositional work, namely of his mastery of counterpoint.
