The organ particularly interested Mendelssohn at three stages. during his youth, in the mid to late 1830s and in 1844. 45. However, he was a passionate improviser and always took the opportunity to play instruments wherever he happened to be. He bound both published and unpublished scores together, known as "The Green Books. " These, with many other treasures, were evacuated from Berlin during World War II. Not all were returned, partly accounting for unpublished organ works without opus numbers remaining undiscovered for many years. Christian Martin Schmidt's extensive research revealed not only errors in published editions but also in previously unknown works.
