Iskay Harawicha, for soprano voice and alto flute composed by Daniel Cueto. For Flute, Soprano Voice. 21st Century, World, Latin. Advanced. , Score. Published by Daniel Cueto. S0.11500. To listen to this piece, visit. https. www. youtube. com. watch. vCjE7lD0PUOQ At the heart of this piece are two anonymous lyrics in kechwa, the most widely spoken non-European language in the Americas. An ancient tongue, it became the official language of the great Inca Empire, and is still spoken by about 10 million people in present-day Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Argentina. Having been an important symbol of status and high culture before the European Conquest, it developed a refined literature which has continued to live and develop orally throughout the centuries. The specific texts I have chosen for this work reflect this sophistication of sonority and meaning. They are anonymous lyrics from the Apurimac region in central Peru, gathered by Jose Maria Arguedas in his book 'Canto Kechwa'. Comparing these texts to alternative versions by other native speakers, and relying on my own basic knowledge of the language, I have made my own renditions of them for the purpose of this work. 'Iskay harawicha', the workÂs title, can be translated as 'A pair of songs'. The pairing of a human voice with another melodic instrument creates a situation that is very interesting to me. a twin song between instruments contrasting and yet alike in nature. Soprano and alto flute create a curious counterpoint fluctuating between polarity and oneness, their combined colors converging with the textÂs deep symbolism and gentle resonances.
