Original

Mene, Mene, Tekel, U'pharsin for Saxophone Quartet Op. 2 composed by Anthony Bannach. For Saxophone,Woodwind Quartet. 21st Century,20th Century. Advanced Intermediate. Score,Set of Parts. Published by Anthony Bannach Music. S0.41049. While knowing for some time that I wanted to write for the medium of saxophone quartet, I had not found the right inspiration for the work until I had reread the story of “The Writing on the Wall” in the Bible, found in the book of Daniel. In Hebrew the writing on the wall is, “Mene, Mene, Tekel, U’pharsin. ” Each movement is based on the meaning of the words fromthe writing on the wall, employing various compositional techniques such as palindromic writing, dynamic and scalar interplay, and extended instrumental techniques to convey as much identity with the biblical story as possible.
