Heinio has done a fine job solving the problem of writing modern music that sings. There are no mindless interval leaps, and the baritone. The diatonic-seeming melodic modules are aurally titillating, and there are no heavy chromatic bottlenecks to obstruct the flow. The light, clear sound of this seven-movement work performed without a break weaves in a sense of disappointed, wounded love that is detached and insensible. The coltish scherzo kicks up ironic and comic tones, even down to falsetto.
