Who knows, when the melodies and chords in this collection are played, the 'Hills of the Old Volcanoes', the 'Fairytale City', the 'Summer Mountain Lake', may emerge from the sound just as they looked when they inspired these pieces - as the sunny hills and plains of the estates of the ancient margraves of Baden, of the hills of the Kaiserstuhl range, as the imposing mountains and the heights of the Black Forest, as the enticingly glittering waters of Lake Constance, the mountain lakes and the Rhine. Often, however, it will be a mighty 'Fortress on the Vine-clad Hilltop', a deeper 'Valley with Blue Mountains', or some quite different picturesque 'Old River' which arises in the mind's eye and takes shape somewhere between outside reality and the depths of an inner world.
