In 1943, he moved to New York City, where he worked as a music critic for the Herald Tribune, and met and became friends with Charles Ives. He taught at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, San Jose State University, and Mills College, settling eventually in Aptos, California with his life partner, Bill Colvig. they met in 1967.
