Jean-Pierre Guignon was born Giovanni Pietro Ghignone, in Turin, on February 10, 1702. One of the foremost violin virtuosi of his era, he gave his first performance in Paris in 1725. He became a musician in the chapel of Prince Savoyen-Carignan in 1730, a post he held for twenty years. He served at the French court from 1733 until 1762. the King awarded him French citizeship and the title of "Roi des Violons et des Menetriers" in 1741. he was the last to hold that title. Guignon died in Versailles on January 30th, 1774. Sonatas for two violoncelli. or two violas da gamba, or two bassoons.
