Fanfare for Piano was written in 1990 to commemorate the acquisition of a new grand piano for the Music Department of San Diego Mesa College, where the composer teaches. It is dedicated to Dr. Irv King who managed the requisition. In this piece the piano's rich sonic capabilities are utilized to evoke different instruments and instrumental choirs such as the opening's call to play ""Like Trumpets. "" and the succeeding responses that are intended to evoke ""String Choir"", ""Gentle Winds"", and ""Deep Brass"". Meditation, written in 2002, is dedicated to Professor Emeritus Will Ogdon from the University of California, San Diego, on the occasion of his 82nd birthday in 2003 and published in A Festschrift for Will Ogdon, UCSD Press, La Jolla, California. A reflective and serenely calm piece, it unfolds in a very gradual way to sustained resonant depths. Will passed away in October, 2013. Happy Dance, the earliest piece in this set. 1989. and most rambunctious, was written for the composer's dear friend, fellow-student-in-the-trenches-of-UCSD and college roommate Victor P. Zupanc who now currently resides with his lovely family in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Victor is Musical Director of the Children's Theater Company of Minneapolis.
