The Pathetique, Grande Sonate Pathetique, Sonata in C Minor, Opus 13 was composed between 1797 and 1799, though the actual date is unknown. This is the first of 32 sonatas Beethoven wrote during his lifetime to have acquired a universal popularity. This particular title was dedicated to Prince Carl von Lichnowsky and its name, Pathetique was Beethoven's own and a mix of influences is apparent.
