It is interesting to note that the composer, who was not particularly fond of the cello as a solo instrument since he was convinced that this instrument can be beautiful only in the orchestra and chamber music as it is only the instrument's central pitch which is refined. as he once commented 'up there it mumbles and down there it rumbles'. composed for the cello this concerto which is sincerely and heartily admired by artists and the public all over the world. The published work is a critical edition following the composer's manuscript. the presented edition uses the newer way of notation for the cello only exceptionally at the direct transition points from the bass clef to the treble clef, in these cases the cello sounds as it has been noted down.
